Running ‘Path Of Exile’ using wine/playonlinux

Path of Exile‘ is an online Action RPG set in a fantasy world. It is developed by New Zealand based independent developer ‘Grinding Gear Games‘ and will be marketed as a downloadable free-to-play game supported by ethical microtransactions. This means if you like to look cool and awesome you’ll have to pay for it. Whenever you don’t care about looks the game doesn’t cost you a dime.

Pre install

There are some minor tweaks/patches to optimize performance. Torsten Andersson pointed out the instructions

  • Tiny patch to shut up annoying d3d fixme warnings: here
  • mmap cache patch for wine: here
  • Install additional packages using winetricks

Install game

Start the installation by running the installer.msi file

wine msiexec /i /path/to/PathOfExileInstaller.msi

Run ‘Path Of Exile’

Once installation is finished you can run the game by using;

wine Client.exe

To run without sound

Some sound issue’s may occur, try running the game without sound or add the ‘openal32 native under winecfg libraries tab’
