Is SquareEnix coming to SteamOS / Linux?

HAHAHAHAHAHA, What?

So yesterday on the Final Fantasy XIII threads a Linux gamer by the name Fast Eddie posted saying comment that Final Fantasy XIII has shown up in his Linux game library. Instantly this not only caught my attention but other Linux gamers as well. The Linux gaming reddit has not just one user but many users also having the same symptoms. Was this a mistake on SquareEnix part? Is this a port by Aspyr Media or Feral Interactive? I had to find out. Speculation and hope ran high from users on reddit and the Final Fantasy XIII thread on Steam.

Here is what we know so far:

  • The game is supporting 32bit OpenVR Linux.
  • SquareEnix was the North American publisher for Wakfu (a native Linux Tactical MMORPG)
  • SquareEnix has been bringing alot of flagship titles to Steam, But as well the company is a big supporter of a console style of gaming.
  • SteamOS will give a “Console” experience to help merge a gap in the industry for gamers and developers alike.

About Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy XIII is a fantasy RPG in which a band of brave humans struggle against fate in the utopian sky city of Cocoon and the primeval world of Pulse. Follow stylish heroine Lightning’s fast paced battles and high adventure in a mysterious new world.

What did I find out.

Well I had thought that Aspyr Media was behind this possible port, so I emailed Michael Blair from Aspyr to ask if they were in fact porting Final Fantasy XIII to Linux / SteamOS. Here is Michael had to say.

Thanks for reaching out Sandy!

As a FF fan, I wish we were. That said, we¹d love an opportunity to dig
into the SquareEnix’s catalogue at some point.

Well Aspyr isn’t behind the port. I have reached out to SquareEnix themselves but I have yet to get a response to my questions. But as soon as I do, I will supply up to date info for you. I am not going to speculate but I have a educated guess to what would make for a very simple explanation. I personally hope SquareEnix is porting the game to test the sales waters as well that Final Fantasy 3, 4, 7, 11, 14 and The Last Remnant make a Linux debut. But until then, let’s keep making our voices heard and hope that SquareEnix decides to make the SteamOS/Linux jump. So game on guys and gals.

That’s a good article,I’ve been following the thread on reddit since it first appeared and I don’t think anyone is poring FFXIII but I would like to be proven wrong. What i would love however is for SE to port Tomb Rider, or Deus Ex:HR, especially that as a spoony one fan, I know that FFXIII is a bad game.

Well, though I highly doubt that FF XIII (or any FF, or any japanese game, in fact) would come to Linux, I think we might have a better chance with Deus Ex: last year, when the hype was high about what was called “the Steambox” at the time, David Anfossi, head of Eidos Montreal that made DX:HR, posted a picture of a Steambox “devkit” (you know, the tiny cube one that turned out not being official but it was the only way to say “we are looking at Valve plans” at the time).
So, nothing official but we can assume that Eidos was one of the developers that were contacted by Valve about their Steam machines plans.
